Home automation is taking over your…well, home. Luckily, this is a good takeover. Let’s talk about chores. I hate chores and you probably do, too. One of the worst is laundry. For one, it takes a while and you can’t exactly multitask. You have to put in a load of laundry into the washing machine, wait, and then transfer it to the dryer. If you forget to check on it, you end up with moldy, damp clothing and you have to start all over again.
Thanks to home automation, new smart washing machines and dryers are hitting the market. Here are the top features of smart washing machines and dryers:
Touchscreen Control Panel
Many new models feature a LCD touchscreen control panel where you can choose from dozens of cycle types and settings to ensure all of your different types of laundry are taken care of properly.
Can you imagine being able to control your washing machine and dryer from anywhere in your house? With built-in WiFi you can turn on or off the machine in any room.
Whirlpool is one brand in particular that is making its smart washer and dryer Nest compatible. This means you can sync it with your Nest Thermostat, allowing your machines to adapt to your life and sense what you need, such as keeping clothing in the dryer fresh if the cycle ends when you are away, can save energy, and implement auto-delay cycles.
App for Scheduling
Samsung is one brand in particular creating smart washer and dryers that have their own smartphone app. Using this app, you can remotely schedule the machines to turn on or off. This is great because it means you don’t have to stay home waiting for your laundry to complete. You can prepare a load of laundry and delay its start for a few hours when you plan on arriving home so all you have to do is switch the load to the dryer. Forget to fold your laundry when warm? Schedule a refresher so you can de-wrinkle.
Due to a number of stories about children falling into the washer or dryer or getting locked in, some of the new smart washers and dryers have an integrated child lock that provides an advanced safety mechanism.
Faster and Bigger
While not necessarily a “smart” feature, the newest smart washers and dryers can wash more clothes faster. But I would argue that this actually is a true home automation feature, as a faster washer and dryer makes your life simpler and reduces the amount of time you spend doing laundry.
